Abstract:
This study aims to analyzed the use of collocation in the English textbook for the
first grade of senior high school. It was aimed to explore, to describe and to find
out the types of collocation used in the textbook and the reason collocation used in
the way they are. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The data
sources were taken from the English textbook “Talk Active 1, English for Senior
High School, Grade X” which was published by Yudhistira on 2016 based on
2013 Curriculum. The data showed there were 3 kinds of genre use in the reading
texts which consist of 14 texts. There were descriptive, narrative, and recount text.
The result showed that there were 5 type of collocation that were used in the
textbook. 24 data were Adjective + Noun types, 12 data were Verb + Noun types,
7 data were Noun + Noun, 7 data were Verb + Prepositional, 6 data were Adverb
+ Adjective and no data were found using Noun + Verb types. The realization of
this study was taken from implicit and explicit meaning from each data based on
level of words, phrases and clauses. The reason of using of collocation in the
English textbook is because one must follow the rules of English writing in order
to avoid the change of meaning that can be for the new English learner to
differentiate which word is collocated and which word is not, as natural
collocation were not always logical or guessable.
