Abstract:
This study aimed at finding out whether the used of star rewards and punishments
strategy on students’ mastery vocabulary. This research applied experimental
research. Population of this research was the second year student of junior high
school in SMP Swasta Darussalam Medan at JL. Darussalam No.26 ABC Medan.
At academic year 2014-2015 with the total population were 192 students. And the
researcher took two classes as the sample. The samples divided into two groups.
The first group as experimental that consist of 49 students in class VIII-3 and the
second group as control group that consist of 49 students in class VIII-4.The
experimental group was taught by using star rewards and punishments and the
control group was taught by lecturing method. The instrument of collecting data
is multiple choice which consist 20 items. After the data have been collected they
were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of analysis showed that t-observed
( to =20.61) was higher than t-table (ttable=with the level of significant ɑ = 0.05 the
value of t-table 1.67 and the degree of freedom (df=96) it showed that t-observed>t-table
(20.61>1.67). The result showed that the alternative hypothesis of the study is
accepted. It means the result of this research proved that using Star Rewards and
Punishments Strategy was significantly more effective to increase the vocabulary
than using Lecturing method.
