Abstract:
This study was carried out to find out the languages variation that realized of the
street children in KOPA Medan. This study focused on researching the languages
variation. The data in this thesis was taken from 9 the street children and
interviews with 4 informants. The total language variation used as data in this
thesis were 35 data. The theories applied in this thesis were theories Holmes
(1992:138-276) that discuss the kinds of language variation based on terms of user
and based on terms of usage. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive -
qualitative approach by collecting data, then classifies the data. The results of the
data analysis showed that the language variations found in the street children in
KOPA Medan. There are 2 kinds of language variation of the street children. The
first is based on terms of user (Sociolect) namely : (vulgar, slang, jargon,
colloquial, and cant language). And based on terms of usage namely, variation
with reference to the field and tenor. Based on the informants, there are impact on
listener‟s attitudes toward language variation that realized by street children such
as Cognitive, Affective, Conative components. The last is there are factors of the
street children used the impolite language variation. They are : the level of
education , social economic, the social network/the impact of their community.
