Abstract:
This research aims to investigate the way of Indonesian celebrities from different
age categories in using online linguistic features and language styles in their
Instagram captions. This present research is qualitative research considering that
the purpose of this research is to build contextual and rounded understanding of
social phenomena which happened around us. The data is taken from Indonesian
celebrities’ posts which are written in English. Then, the data is in form of
celebrities’ captions. In the process of collecting the data, the researcher starts
with choosing several celebrities’ accounts based on their age classifications. In
the stage of analyzing the data, the researcher firstly observes then analyzes them
according to online linguistic features. Age categories in this study consist of
teenagers, younger adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults. The result of this
present study found that teenagers tend to use fewer online linguistic features such
as abbreviation or acronymy, punctuation, and emoticonymy in their Instagram
captions.
