dc.description.abstract The experimental quantitative research design was applied in this research. The objective of the research was to find out the effect of the applying self and peer assessment method on the students’ speaking ability. This research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Tanjung Sari Medan academic year 2019/2020 which consisted of 3 clasess as the population. The sample was consisted of 80 students which were taken by using purposive sampling technique and divided into two different groups namely experimental group which consisted of 40 students and control group which consisted of 40 students. Self and peer assessment sheet was used as instrument which consisted of five indicators and administrated in pre-test and post-test. Based on the data analysis, the result showed that there was any significant effect of the applying self and peer assessment method on the students’ speaking ability with t-critical (tc) value was higher than ttable on the level (6,4603> 2,024). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It also found that the students who were taught by applying self and peer assessment (experimental group) got higher scores than the students who were taught by applying traditional method (control group). So, it meant that applying self and peer assessment on the students’ speaking ability was succeeded. en_US
