Title: The Effect of Applying Metacognitive Strategy on the Students’ Achievement in Reading Comprehension

Abstract: This study deals with The Effect of applying Metacognitive Strategy on the Students’ Achievement in Reading Comprehension. This objective of the research was to investigate the effect of applying Metacognitive Strategy on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMP Swasta Imelda Medan, on Jl. Bilal no 24 Pulo Brayan Darat in the even semester 2016/2017 academic year. The population of this study was the eight grade students which consist 4 clases, VIII-A(29) VIII-B(30) VIII-C(32) VIII-D(32) with 123 students By using Cluster Random Sampling and the research chooses 2 clases, VIII-A(29) and VIII-D(32), consists of 61 students. Were class as the sample. Class VIII-A as Experimental group was taught Metacognitive Stragety and class VIII-D as Control group was taught Lecturing Method. Multiple choice test with 20 item were administrated to the students. The researcher gave a pretest, treatment and post-test to both of the groups. Having collected the data, they were analyzed by using T-test formula. The result shows that T-observe was 2.09 and T-table was 1.671. the fact shows that T-observe was greather than T-table. It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The result of this research concludes that, there was a significant effect on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension after being taught by applying Metacognitive Strategy.
