dc.description.abstractThis research dealt with figurative language in the novel The Rainbow Troops by Andrea Hirata. The objectives of the research were to find out types of figurative language and the reasons of the realized of figurative laguage use in the novel. The source of the data was taken from the language utterences and sentences in the novel. By using descriptive qualitative method of the data were analyzed and it was found totally, here were 52 uttereces, 5 types and 3 reasons of using of figurative language; they were simile 24 occurences, personification 10 occurences, methapor 4 occurences, hyperbole 12 occurences and methonomy 2 occurences. The reason of using figurative language were figurative language afforded readers imaginative pleasure of literary works was 11 occurences, a way of bringing additional imagery into verse was 35 occurences, a way of adding emotional intensity to otherwise merely informative statement and conveying attittudes along with information was 6 occurencesen_US
