dc.description.abstractThis study dealt with an analysis of the usage of cohesive devices in writing descriptive paragraph by the second year students at Mts Islamiyah Medan. The objectives of this study are to find out the types of cohesive devices used in the students’ writing descriptive paragraph and to derive the dominant type of cohesive devices in the students’ writing. Descriptive qualitative method was applied to analyze the data. There were 120 students as the population and 55 students as the sample. The findings of this study showed that all the types cohesive devices were found in the student’s writing descriptive paragraph. The total number of cohesive devices of grammatical cohesion is 59, Reference 15 (21.4%), Ellipsis 5 (7.14%), Substitutions 1 (1.42%), Conjunction 38 (54.3%). While the total number of cohesive devices lexical cohesion were 11, Repitition 1 (1.42%), Synonymy 1 (1.42%), Hyponymy 3 (4.3%), Meronymy 6 (8.6%) and nothing found for Antonymy. Based on the conclusion, the dominant types of cohesive devices in the student’s writing descriptive paragraph by the second year students of Mts Islamiyah Medan were conjunction, that were 38 (54.3%)en_US
