Title: Refusal Strategies Used By Character In Despicable Me Movie

Abstract: This study deals with refusal strategies used by character in Despicable Me movie. It was aimed to investigate types of refusal strategies and the most dominant of refusal strategies in Despicable Me movie. This study was conducted by using qualitative descriptive research. The source of data was script of Despicable Me movie. Data were analyzed utterances by utterances which contained types of refusal strategies used by character in Despicable Me movie. Technique for collecting data in this study was documentation and analyzing the data based on Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The result showed that there were 36 data refusal strategies found in despicable me movie. It consisted of 8 (22.22%) for directive strategies, and 28 (77.78%) for indirective strategies. The most dominant of refusal strategies found in despicable me movie was indirective strategies with amount 28 (77.78%). It means that in despicable me movie that the speaker gave many reasons, explanations, wishes, statements in refusing something and the speaker not only long sequences of negotiation and cooperative achievements, but also ―face saving maneuvers to accommodate the noncompliant nature of the act‖.
