An Analysis of Idiomatic Expression in the Indonesian Subtitle of the Movie The Parent Trap

Abstract

This study deal with the analysis of idiomatic expression found in the Indonesian subtitle of The Parent Trap movie. The objectives of the study were to find out the idiomatic expression and to classify the idiomatic expression found in The Parent Trap movie. The data in this research was taken from subtitle of The Parent Trap movie. The film has 128 minutes duration. Descriptive qualitative method was applied to analyze the data. Thus, in doing this research, library research was applied in analyzing the data. From the data obtained, there were fifty five (55) utterances found in the movie The Parent Trap that contained of idiomatic expression. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there were eight (8) classification of idiomatic expression based on the Indonesian subtitle of the movie The Parent Trap. They were:Idiom with the key words from special categories 5 (part of time 2, part of body 1, part of number 1, part of comparative degree 1), idioms with preposition 2, phrasal verb 15, sentences 11, idiomatic pairs 6 (pairs of adjective 2, pairs of adverb 2, pairs of verb 2), idiom with noun and adjective 6 (adjective and noun 4, noun phrase 2), verbal idiom 7, key word with idiomatic uses 2 (adjective and adverb)
