An experimental research and descriptive quantitative method were used. The location of the research was at SMP Muhammadiyah 02 Pahlawan, Medan, A.Y 2019/2020. The population of this research was the eighth grade students, and total sampling technique was used by choosing 2 classes as experimental and control class. Each class consisted of 30 students. The instrument of the data collection was tests consisting of 25 items given as pre-test and post-test given to both experimental and control groups. Based on the data analysis, the result showed that applying shadowing technique on the students listening ability was significantly effected which was proven by the calculated of t-test. The t-test result showed that tobserved was higher than ttable (5.2915 > 2.024), = 0.05, at df = 28. On the other words, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected; the effect of shadowing technique on the students’ listening ability in words recognition was 63.80% and 36.20% from the other factors
