dc.description.abstractThis study deals analyzing aimed to find out the Improving Students’ Speaking Achievement through Small Group Discussion Method. This subject of this research was eight grade students SMP Swasta Islamiyah Belawan, in academic year 2018/2019. It consisted of one class with 38 students as respondents. The objectives of this research to find out the process of learning speaking with Small Group Discussion Method. To find out improvement on the students’ speaking ability by using Small Group Discussion. This research was conducted by using classroom action research. The technique of analyzing data was applied in this research were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were taken from observation sheet, interview and documentation. The quantitative data were taken from tests. The tests were given to the students in the form of pre-test, post-test I and post-test II. The result of data analysis showed that there was an improvement on the students’ speaking ability from each cycle. It was showed from the mean of pre-test was 63,94, after improving students’ achievement of small group discussion strategy was applied, there was improvement of the result of the students‘ mean which was 73.86 and for the second cycle after reflection on the first cycle there was an improvement of the students‘ mean which was 82.73. Moreover in the pre-test, there were 47.36% (18 students of 38 students) who got score ≥ 70. In the post-test I, there were 60,52% (23 students of 38 students) who got score ≥ 70. In the post-test II, there were 100% (38 students of 38 students) who got score ≥ 70. So, the total percentage of the improvement from pre-test to post-test II was about 60%.en_US
