English Department of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, UniversitasMuhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU). 2016. The objective of the study in this research was to find out the correlation between students’ ability in mastering grammar and the students’ achievement in speaking and to find out percentage of the correlation between students’ ability in mastering grammar and the students achievement in speaking. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMP MUHAMMADIYAH-1 MEDAN. The population were 7 classes consist 216 students. The researcher took a class Terpadu II and Reguler as a sample by using Cluster Random Sampling. In gathering data, the researcher used an essay test to measure grammar mastery and written test to measure speaking achievement. In analyzing data, researcher used Pearson Product Moment formula. After analyzing, it was found r- calculated 0.455 and the degree of freedom (df= n-2) was 60. It means that r- calculated was higher than r- table. There is significance between students’ ability in mastering grammar and the students’ achievement in speaking. So the relationship between two variables above were significant. Therefore the alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis rejected.en_US
